A Vertically Integrated Project (VIP) is an ongoing research project led by an academic supervisor and made up of a team of students from any level of study (the ‘vertical’ aspect). The team of students can come from different subject areas with diverse backgrounds and skills across both arts and science. While initially promoted heavily within Engineering and STEM subjects, VIP increasingly involves students from the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

The interest in VIP at St Andrews arose through the work of the Enterprise Education Committee seeking to embed enterprise capabilities and an enterprising mindset in the curriculum.

The current 2020-2021 academic year is the first time that we have offered VIP modules, with 5 projects commencing in Semester 1 and 3 projects commencing in Semester 2. These 8 current projects which form the first VIP cohort, with supervisors from 6 schools and 71 students, represent a diverse range of exciting research at St Andrews; from mapping acoustic data from Dolphins, to exploring the history of war veterans.
