Rocky Plants for the City

The St Andrews Botanic Gardens (SABG) conducts different kinds of research into the effect of plants on the habitats that they grow in and vice versa. One example of this is currently displayed in one of the glasshouses, where plants that grow in rocky terrain are studied with the intent to adapt them into cities. In an interview with Dr Harry Watkins (Director of the SABG), he justifies this by arguing that cities have a number of surprising similarities with rocky terrain in many different aspects that allow for such rocky plants to thrive in them. Dr Watkins also stated that the currently developing Tangled Bank project provides significantly more opportunities to carry out research into the effect of plants in different unique local habitats, while making such habitats more accessible to everyone.
