Mutual Aid Clinic

The Mutual Aid Clinic VIP focuses upon researching, documenting and examining the history and contemporary politics of marginalised communities within the international system. In any one year the VIP will focus on working with a specific community to bring out the specific dynamics of the experiences of that community. It will also highlight the similarities that exist in terms of the systems of oppression that all marginalised communities face.

Each year this community focus will include capturing:

  • the history of the community and their contemporary political circumstances;
  • how these circumstances manifest in terms of a number of key indicators: e.g. education, healthcare, employment, and the justice system;
  • the theoretical and practical priorities that can be highlighted in terms of recognising the systems of oppression that every marginalised community faces.
  • how Human Rights Clinics based at universities may be able to provide mutual aid to the communities with which they are involved.

The Mutual Aid Clinic will offer students the opportunity to develop their research skills in a range of areas and practical tasks. A key aim is to replicate the ways in which non-governmental organisations (NGO’s) utilise their research teams meaning that it offers an opportunity to replicate real-world research conditions for human rights practitioners.
